Ostran Notebook

Standards & Process.

Ostran Notebook operates under the following editorial principles: articles are reviewed by at least one second editor before publication, sources are cited where appropriate, corrections are noted publicly, and writers disclose any commercial relationships that could influence their selection of subject matter.

“Ostran Notebook is an independent editorial publication focused on everyday wellness practices. The publication is not affiliated with any commercial, governmental, or institutional body.”

This statement governs all editorial decisions. No article, review, or commentary published on Ostran Notebook is written to serve a commercial interest, promote a product, or represent the position of any organisation other than the publication itself. The publication is funded independently and does not carry advertising or sponsored content.

The editorial process, step by step.

01

Topic Selection

Article topics emerge from sustained editorial observation — reader correspondence, shifts in published nutritional research, seasonal patterns in everyday food practice, or the identification of a subject that has received insufficient careful attention. Topics are not proposed by commercial partners. The editorial team selects subjects based on their relevance to the publication's areas of inquiry and the availability of sources that can sustain a long-form approach.

02

Source Gathering and Review

Writers are expected to gather sources from published nutritional research, established dietary guidelines, and verified data from recognised research bodies before beginning a draft. The publication draws on peer-reviewed nutritional studies, published dietary guidelines from public health bodies in the United Kingdom and internationally, and field observation. Personal testimony and anecdote are used sparingly and are always attributed. Unpublished claims are not used as primary sources.

03

First Draft and Writer Disclosure

Writers submit a first draft alongside a brief disclosure statement identifying any commercial relationships — with food brands, supplement companies, or other commercial entities — that could conceivably influence the article's subject selection or framing. Disclosure is mandatory. If a relationship is identified that presents a substantive conflict, the article is either reassigned or the relationship is noted transparently in the published piece.

04

Second Editorial Review

Every article is reviewed by a second editor before publication. The second editor assesses the piece for factual accuracy, tonal register, source integrity, and adherence to the publication's editorial standards. The review is not merely a copy-editing exercise. Second editors are authorised to return articles for substantive revision, request additional sourcing, or escalate concerns about the accuracy of factual claims to the lead editor for a final determination.

05

Independent Batch Verification

Content published by Ostran Notebook is selected based on published nutritional research and undergoes independent batch verification for quality and labelling accuracy. Where factual claims are drawn from specific studies or data sources, those sources are checked against the original publication before the article goes to press. Data figures, percentages, and quantitative claims receive a dedicated verification step.

06

Publication and Post-Publication Monitoring

Articles are published on the bi-weekly schedule. Following publication, the editorial team monitors reader correspondence for factual corrections, updated evidence, or new data that materially affects the article's claims. Corrections are handled as described in the corrections policy below. Articles that reference studies subsequently retracted or significantly revised are updated accordingly.

07

Annual Standards Review

The editorial standards document is reviewed annually by the lead editor and at least one contributing editor. Revisions to the standards — driven by changes in nutritional research practice, reader feedback, or developments in the editorial landscape — are incorporated and noted in the public record. The current version of this document was reviewed and confirmed in January 2026.

How sources are evaluated.

A

Peer-Reviewed Research

The highest weight is given to peer-reviewed nutritional studies published in established journals. Where a study is cited, the publication date, the research body, and the study's limitations are considered. Single studies are not used to support strong claims without corroborating evidence.

B

Established Dietary Guidelines

Published dietary guidelines from recognised public health bodies — including Public Health England, the British Dietetic Association, and equivalent international bodies — are treated as reference standards. Departures from established guidelines are noted explicitly and sourced carefully.

C

Field Observation and Practice

Articles regularly draw on the direct observation of food practice — the kitchen, the market, the weekly meal routine. This observational material is treated as illustrative rather than evidentiary. It supplements sourced claims; it does not substitute for them.

How errors are handled.

Ostran Notebook takes factual accuracy seriously. When a reader, contributor, or member of the editorial team identifies a factual error in a published article, the following procedure is followed:

  1. 1. The correction is brought to the attention of the lead editor via the contact form on this site or directly by email to [email protected].
  2. 2. The lead editor assesses the correction within five working days, reviewing the original source material and the contested claim.
  3. 3. If the correction is confirmed, the article is updated and a correction note is appended at the foot of the published piece, identifying the original claim, the corrected version, and the date of correction.
  4. 4. The person who identified the error is acknowledged in the correction note unless they prefer to remain anonymous.

Ostran Notebook does not delete or quietly edit articles to remove errors without a public correction note. The record of the original publication — including its errors, where confirmed — is preserved as part of the published correction.

The nature of editorial content.

Articles published on Ostran Notebook are editorial in nature and reflect the writers' observations on everyday wellness practices. The content is not intended as professional advice, nor as guidance for the management of any specific condition. Readers with specific concerns about their daily routines are encouraged to speak with a qualified wellness professional.

We recommend speaking with a qualified wellness or nutrition professional before introducing any new habit or routine to your daily life, particularly if you have specific dietary requirements.

Commercial independence.

No Sponsored Content

Ostran Notebook does not accept sponsored articles, branded content, or advertorial contributions of any kind. The publication does not receive funding from food manufacturers, supplement producers, or any commercial entity with an interest in the dietary topics it covers.

Where external organisations are mentioned — as sources, as the subjects of articles, or in passing reference — this is because they are relevant to the editorial content. It does not imply endorsement, partnership, or any commercial relationship.

Writer Independence

Writers for Ostran Notebook are expected to declare any commercial relationship — whether current or within the preceding twelve months — with organisations whose products or services are relevant to their article's subject matter. This declaration is submitted alongside every draft.

Where a declared relationship is judged to constitute a substantive conflict of interest, the editorial team reserves the right to reassign the article, request that the relationship be disclosed within the article itself, or decline to publish. The final editorial decision rests with the lead editor.
